Thors appoint White as captain

THORVERTON will have a new captain in 2014 for a hoped-for promotion push in the B Division.

The new man at the helm is the vastly experienced Graham White (pictured), who knows a thing or to about captaining B Division sides having held the tiller at Alphington and Clyst St George.

White, 38, joined Thorverton last season after three years with Exeter.

James Hope was skipper last year, but working kept getting in the way for the much-travelled all-rounder, who relied on senior ‘pros’ White and vice-captain David Baldock for much of the day-to-day work.

White is Thors fourth captain in as many seasons, but has no plans to give the side a facelift to go with another new regime.

Thors were a respectable fifth last season – Paul Fielder (504) and Baldock (449) leading with the bat, Jake Choules (26) the pick of bowlers – and with one or two improvements could be top-two material.

White has made one signing, Queenslander Daniel Beatty who takes the new ball and smacks middle order runs, but only has a bit of additional tinkering in mind.

“Daniel comes recommended by our previous overseas Kobi Griggs, who was apparently ‘put on his backside’ by him in a recent club game, so he should be pretty useful,” said White.

“Generally, I won’t be looking towards too many changes of personnel, more tweaking really.

“I feel our strength will be in that we are not reliant on one or two stars, but have good depth in batting and bowling.

“Any of our top seven have the ability to score a B Division hundred and several have done so already. “

White already has plenty of bowling options, but could do with one of them taking a few more wickets. Nick Barton with 16 was the best of the rest behind Crouch.

“I am hoping Jake Crouch can bowl as he did in the second half of last year and continue to improve,” said White.

“With Daniel Beatty, Will Denford and Gillam Crouch - when school commitments allow - we have some interesting pace options.

“Nick Barton is a proven left-arm spinner of quality - and if Jake Choules continues to develop we’ll have good control with the pace off.

“I would like a couple more options at fifth-sixth bowler, all-rounder and I am always keen to hear from players of any type who might wish to come on board.”

Thorverton start indoor nets at Devon Cricket Centre in February.
