WILTSHIRE v DEVON DAY TWO
Day One |
DEVON dominated with the bat at Corsham to set Wiltshire an improbable 494 to win batting last.
The side bowled out for 119 on day one, stormed on to 474 all out on day two with David Lye leading the way with a century.
Skipper Neil Hancock hit 84- he and Lye notched 152 for the fifth wicket – and there were half-centuries for James Burke (64) and Scott Barlow (50) plus a near miss (45) for Rob Holman.
With a 19-run lead from day one, Wiltshire were left 17 overs last night and all day today to make 494, or survive.
Wiltshire didn’t make the best of starts as they were 51 for three at last night’s close, 445 runs short with seven wickets intact.
Day one at Corsham saw 20 wickets fall for 219 runs in the combined first innings totals, yet day two was completely different.
Centurion David Lye said there was a simple explanation: he and his colleagues learned a few lessons.
“In the first innings we got on with it, played far too many big scoring shots far too soon and pretty quickly got out,” said Lye.
“Second innings the difference was not the pitch – that was still doing a bit – but that the batters learned their lesson.
“Instead of going at it from the first ball we played ourselves in and then played some shots.
“It clearly worked as I wasn’t the only one to score runs, which was a good thing.
“The bad thing is if Wiltshire do the same it will be pretty hard to get them out, even if they don’t get the runs.”
Devon, 71 for none overnight, negotiated the first half hour without too many problems. although opener James Burke could have fallen caught-and-bowled to Tay Afridi early on.
The breakthrough came on 97 when Rob Holman was rapped on the pad by Simon Warner and trudged off disappointed at missing out on a 50.
Rob Woodman and Bob Dawson went in successive balls to Simon Warner, which brought Lye in at 119 for three to stave off the hat-trick, which he did.
Burke got bogged down after reaching 50 and, after two failed attempts to get out caught in the same over finally succeeded and was out for 65.
Skipper Hancock joined Lye at 157 for four and between them they pushed the score up to 309 for five.
Hancock was quite happy to be towed along by Lye, who reached his 50 in 74 balls and went on to his ton in another 53.
Hancock soldiered on to 84 when he was sixth out a 347, caught at mid-off trying to hit over the inner ring.
After tea there was a brisk 30 for Trevor Anning – he hit Afridi for six then got out next ball – and a maiden Championship 50 for Barlow in a last-wicket stand worth 69 with Chris Bradley.
