Zac Bess leaving Sidmouth

ALL-rounder Zac Bess is set to leave Sidmouth and follow cousin Dominic to Exeter.

Zac, who was 21 in February, has had two difficult years due to injury and only featured infrequently for Sidmouth’s 1st XI.

Those injuries seem to have cleared up now and Bess has been batting and bowling for Exeter University 1st XI, where he is a second-year student.

Devon have named Zac (pictured, left) in the side for their Unicorns Cup game against Dorset at Sidmouth this Sunday.

The university has close links with Exeter CC, hardly surprising as the County Ground is on the edge of the campus and has been used by the students for matches.

Dom, who has been working with Somerset Academy coaches during the winter, left Sidmouth in search of regular 1st XI cricket.

No reason has been given by player or either club for Zac’s decision to leave the Fortfield.

Miles Lenygon, the Exeter captain, has confirmed Bess has signed but won’t be commenting until the paperwork is complete.

The transfer has missed the deadline for this weekend’s round of matches, meaning Bess can’t play for Exeter against Heathcoat.

His place in the Sidmouth side has gone to up-and-coming keeper-batter Dan Powell.

The Bess name is synonymous with Sidmouth as members of the family have been playing there for more than 50 years.

The line started with Gerald Bess, continued with his sons Russell and Graham and was kept going by Russell’s son Dom and Graham’s boys Zac, Luke and Josh.
